Monkey Breed Profiles

The mating and reproduction of the monkeys vary depending upon the climatic condition and environment. But the birth of the monkey is generally timed in order to coincide with period when the food availability is abundant.

For example monkeys living in Brazil, Peru and Colombia have sexual union during June to August which is a dry season. So that the birth may occur on wet season in which food availability is abundant and female can spend less time on foraging. The male does not take any responsibility for raising the infants.

The monkeys both female and male become mature sexually at the age of 30 months.

Oestrous cycle of monkey is normally about 1 month. In the wild environment the birth rate is more dependants upon environment and season, but in the monkeys which are kept captive it can happen in any month. The time interval between one-birth to another is approximately one year.

The monkey has 161 to 165 days of gestation period.

Majority of the monkey births happen at night. The period of labor extends up to an hour. The grooming of the newborn is started immediately after the delivery. The infants have open eye at the time of birth. The infant have pink face and a black coat at the time of birth. These black coats will be replaced by an adult pelage at the age of 2 months. Monkey give birth only one infant at a time. Twins are born more rarely.
